Lleida is a territory deeply shaped by water. Its ecosystems, landscapes, and inhabitants are constantly formed and re-formed by the force of rivers, aquifers, wetlands, snow, and fog. Several river basins extend across the province: that of the Segre River, with its tributaries the Noguera Pallaresa and the Noguera Ribagorçana, and that of the Garonne. The waters of these rivers are stored in reservoirs, processed in plants, and distributed through hydraulic infrastructures for farming and livestock, hydroelectric power generation, industrial production, and drinking water supply. The large-scale distribution of water has transformed not only agriculture, but also individual and collective ways of life.

Bodies of Water. Watery Embodiments of Matter and Signs examines the natural and cultural impact of water on ecosystems and on the collective imagination. The works address the consequences of drought, the privatization of water, environmental pollution, the transformation of land and landscape, urban form, popular symbolism and culture, meteorological phenomena, biological processes, and the legal status of natural entities. As philosopher Astrida Neimanis argues, water is not merely a “mass” but a “body” in constant change, one that connects all beings and carries their experiences and histories.
