“1,056 Toponyms of the Siurana River” at Espai Quera

From 6 to 31 October 2026, the window of Espai Quera (carrer de Petritxol, 2, Barcelona) hosts 1,056 Toponyms of the Siurana River as part of Aparadors Artístics, a route of artist interventions in around forty landmark shops in the Gothic Quarter.

The work (mixed media on paper, 150 × 64 cm, 2026) grew out of La vora oberta (The Open Shore), a journey on foot along the Siurana River, from the Prades Mountains to its confluence with the Ebro. The 1,056 place names—farmhouses, springs, ravines, hermitages, weirs, villages and mines—are handwritten in the order in which the places are encountered on foot, flowing down the paper like the river itself.

As the Siurana is depleted by the diversion of its waters towards Riudecanyes—in operation since 1950, with the canal, designed by Joaquim Blasco, declared complete in 1951—naming becomes an act of restitution: retracing by hand what was once traced on foot.

The work is installed in the former Llibreria Quera, which opened on carrer de Petritxol in 1916 and specialised in mountain literature from 1937, becoming a touchstone for generations of walkers in Barcelona.

On 25 October, La vora oberta will also be presented at Castell de Falset.

Aparadors Artístics is a project by the cultural publication Hänsel* i Gretel*, directed by Llucià Homs and Fèlix Riera, in collaboration with Barna Centre and La Vanguardia, and with the support of Barcelona City Council (Ciutat Vella District). The artwork was made with the support of Terra d’Art, Associació cultural del Priorat.
