Art and Nature in Creation 2018

La entrega

My project La Entrega, act I has been selected for one of the two «Art and Nature in Creation 2018» grants, promoted by Centre d’Art La Panera (Lleida), together with the Centre d’Art i Natura de Farrera and the Centro de Arte y Naturaleza de Huesca (CDAN).

I would like to thank the jury (Cèlia Del Diego Thomas, Juan Guardiola, Pere Bascones) and the three organising centres. And to congratulate again the other winner, Olga Olivera-Tabeni.

The project

In the Pyrenees, while developing the project On the Border, I learned that walking is a way of giving oneself in order to take possession of time and space. This time, the aim is to give — to cede — that time and that space to its recipients.

From this premise La Entrega is born, a project conceived as a set of actions based on walking, understood as a creative practice, a stimulation of thought and a refutation of an alienating, corrupted and polluted social system. In Spanish and Catalan, the project’s title plays on the double meaning of the word «entrega», which refers both to the idea of handing over and to that of self-abnegation, a common feature of artistic practice and of walking.

The residency project will begin with the handing over of a series of works on paper made during my walk to the Centre d’Art i Natura of Farrera from my studio at Piramidón, Barcelona. These sheets of paper (in four different sizes between 50×70 and 140×200), folded the way maps are usually folded, will be unusual travel notebooks, at once logbooks and inner maps. It will thus be a handing over of the work, but also a giving of the artist and walker, of the travel time and the space covered.

If the production of On the Border was characterised by very strict technical planning (technique, size, support) within a traditional framework such as plein air painting, in La Entrega there will be more room for improvisation, drawing on the experience gained and introducing geographic and environmental elements into the creative process.

The route will begin on 25 September 2018 and will last approximately 21 days.
